A set of 28 principal indicators have been identified for their ability to indicate performance in core activities of the University and enable comparison with equivalent indicators for other UK and Scottish higher education institutions. The indicators are grouped under four main headings: student recruitment and student numbers, learning and teaching, research and knowledge transfer, finance and resources.

The Higher Education Statistics Agency produces performance indicators on behalf of the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department for Employment and Learning. Performance Indicators provide comparative data on the performance of institutions in widening participation, student retention, learning and teaching outcomes, research output and employment of graduates.
