Academic Schools & Institutes
Heriot-Watt University is organised into six Schools, each of which provides academic programmes that reflect our emphasis on professional courses which prepare students for graduate level employment. Within each programme there are a number of different courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level (except for the Edinburgh Business School and the Institute of Petroleum Engineering which are exclusively postgraduate). The University is recognised internationally as a centre of high calibre research in science, engineering and business and we believe that this high level of performance in research has a direct bearing on the quality of our taught courses.
The School of the Built Environment offers an almost unique range of educational opportunities in the planning, design, construction and development of our environment and infrastructure. The School has an excellent national and international research reputation as the leading Built Environment research institution in Scotland, and one of the top in the UK. It has pioneered innovative education across its disciplines, including distance learning opportunities for Masters students and international links within many of its undergraduate programmes.
The School of Engineering and Physical Sciences is built around the established subjects of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical, electronic and computer engineering, chemistry and physics, but our interdisciplinary structure gives us a unique advantage in the pursuit of new and exciting interdisciplinary topics. Our School is a community of some two thousand staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students and our mission is the creation and transfer of knowledge through our research, teaching and learning, for the advancement of our subject and to contribute to society.
The School of Life Sciences prides itself on providing a friendly and supportive learning environment. There are rigorous teaching programmes in Biological Sciences, Sport and Exercise Science and in Applied Psychology. The School also includes the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling, and the Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology.
The School of Management and Languages has four departments: Accountancy and Finance, Economics, Languages and Intercultural Studies, and Management. The School is one of the largest in the University and is based at the Edinburgh, Scottish Borders (Galashiels) and Dubai campuses. With over 100 full-time academic staff the School is committed to providing students with a learning environment in which they can fulfil their potential.
The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS), provides advanced learning in the core skills required for science, technology and commerce. Students can study courses containing specialist modules that will prepare them for vocations ranging from finance and the actuarial profession, to artificial intelligence and multimedia systems. MACS is strongly orientated towards research and advanced postgraduate courses. Research has been independently assessed as being of international or national excellence whilst the School's master's courses attract students from across the globe.
Since its beginnings in 1883 the School of Textiles and Design has specialised in the education of professionals and practitioners in the global textile and clothing industry and has established a reputation as one of the world's leading textile institutions. Located at the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels, the School is small and friendly which together with its wide range of IT and production machinery, provides a stimulating and creative environment for textile and fashion designers.
Edinburgh Business School is the Graduate School of Business at Heriot-Watt University. Its main focus is the provision of applied management skills to both individuals and major corporations. The School is located in a state of the art teaching and administrative centre on the main University campus, where the needs of on-campus, corporate and international students are met in one location. The School offers a range of postgraduate programmes in business and management, including one of the most popular online distance learning MBA programmes in the world.
The Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University is recognised internationally as one of the leading centres of excellence in petroleum engineering teaching, training and research. It is multi-disciplinary and focuses on upstream oil and gas resources. Our mission is to enhance the intellectual and economic wealth of the nation and the petroleum engineering community by providing leadership, innovation and the highest level of quality in every aspect of our work.
