The National Framework Agreement (for the Modernisation of Pay Structures) is an agreement developed in partnership between employers and trade unions to address the need to modernise the pay structure in higher education supported by job evaluation. It is also a recommendation for harmonising working hours. Information on the implementation of the Agreement within Heriot-Watt is provided.

The University recognises employees as its most important resource and the Personal Development Review (PDR) process is one of the ways in which individuals can be made aware of their value to the organisation through being able to highlight their own contribution, receive feedback, and understand how it links to School/Institute/Section/team objectives. The process also enables opportunities for individual development to be identified and addressed and provides a formal opportunity for reviewees to discuss and address a range of other work-related issues. The PDR process encourages good staff management practice across the University and improved communication between management and staff.
