The Research And Development, Innovation, Knowledge Adoption and Liaison (RADIKAL) project team aims to bring industry and academia closer together solving common problems and share resource such as costly facilities.

SMI - the centre for excellence for advanced manufacturing solutions at Heriot-Watt University - is one of 16 IMRCs (Innovative Manufacturing Research Centres) established by EPSRC with additional financial support from Industry. Our mission is to support manufacturing innovation through research in technologies that underpin sustainable growth of high value-added manufacturing industries in Scotland and the rest of the UK, by exploiting a constructive engagement between academic researchers and industrial stakeholders. The SMI is based on three research themes: Digital Tools, Microsystems and Photonics.

As a technology-focused university Heriot-Watt has built up an impressive range of laboratories, workshops and specialised equipment which can be accessed by companies for their own use. The Technology Transfer team works with inventors to define the invention, evaluate its commercial potential and assist in protecting and exploiting the innovation. Early discussion with TRS about potentially commercialisable ideas is recommended in order to maximise the chances of success.
