Research into the development of bilingual skills (analysing developmental processes and designing structured forms of intervention to enhance language learning) and their communicative use (particularly their application to translating and interpreting and the intercultural social positioning of participants in mediated bilingual encounters).
The interests of this research group include the application of knowledge of human perception to problems in computer vision, cognitive changes affecting the mobility of older people, and attentional processes underlying driving and work performance.
The major theme of research in physical chemistry is Dynamics, Photochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy ie the interactions of molecules with each other, with solid or liquid surfaces, or with light. These studies provide profound insights into the nature of chemistry at its most fundamental level. They are also of direct practical benefit in a diversity of fields, ranging from environmentally significant reactions in the atmosphere, surfaces that are important in the depths of interstellar dust clouds, through probes of combustion and technological plasmas, to the creation of new diamond surfaces and the development of sensitive analytical probes based on them.
Research in this group encompasses five main themes: Industrial lasers, Laser-based manufacturing processes, Optical sensing, Fibre-optic beam delivery, and Optical interconnects and data communication.
