Established in 1990, the CERT research centre's principal focus has been on the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and East Asia. More recently, CERT's research has extended beyond the former socialist countries to include emerging economies throughout the world.
The Centre for Research into Socially Inclusive Services - or CRSIS - undertakes interdisciplinary research into the provision and use of local private and public services in deprived areas, acting as a national centre of expertise on issues of social inclusion and service provision.
Heriot-Watt's Sports Academy and the Centre for Sport and Exercise provide a supportive environment to help develop individuals at all levels from recreational physical activity through to elite sports performance. The Sports Academy includes an indoor Astrodome, physiotherapy and rehabilitation suite, six full-sized UEFA football pitches and a Sports Science and Sports Medicine Centre. The Centre for Sport and Exercise includes three multi-purpose sports halls, three floodlit tennis courts, climbing wall, squash courts, Nautilus suite, and Cardiovascular suite. Our sportsmen and women represent their country internationally in many sports including athletics, karate, sailing, squash and swimming.
The Centre for Translating and Interpreting Studies in Scotland - or CTISS - provides a focus for research expertise in translation studies, social communication and applied linguistics. The Centre one of only three UK institutions that belong to CIUTI (Conférence Internationale d 'Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes)
The International Study Centre (ISC) offers students the best preparation for our undergraduate degrees, leading directly into the second year of study. The Undergraduate Certificate combines academic modules, study skills and English language training. Established in 2005 with funding from the retail entrepreneur George Davis, this research centre aims to become a major international hub for research in the retail clothing sector. It combines the academic study of dynamic retail practice with the delivery of research-informed programmes tailored to the needs of the next general of retail entrepreneurs. Specific research foci include fashion retailing, luxury brand management and the changing culture of consumption.
The University Health Service provides a full and increasing range of general medical and dental facilities under the UK National Health Service. A team of community specialists provide services on a sessional basis such as psychiatric nursing, midwifery, dietetics and health visiting. Private health services including physiotherapy and optometry are also offered on a sessional basis.
The University's Health Service is provided by the Riccarton General Practice for medical services and the Colinton Dental Practice for dental services. The Health Service reports annually to the University Court.
At Heriot-Watt, the community of postgraduate students undertaking taught and research courses is 1,500 strong and has representation from around 100 countries. Around two thirds of the on-campus students are from countries outside of the UK. With this in mind there is huge opportunity for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary interaction. This opportunity has been recognised by the University through the creation of a new multi-million pound, purpose built Postgraduate Centre to be completed in 2008. This state-of-the-art building will provide a forum for postgraduate students and researchers of all disciplines to meet and share their ideas.
