contracts
The University aims to employ all staff on an open-ended basis in every appropriate circumstance. However, appointment of staff on a fixed term basis will be appropriate, in certain circumstances. Staff employed on fixed term contract will have similar terms and conditions of employment to colleagues in the University in comparable jobs with open ended contracts.
A fixed term contract should only be terminated if there is no longer a requirement for that particular job to be done. This will normally arise as the result of the funding running out, or a cessation or reduction of an activity. Human Resources advise Schools, Institutes and sections on a monthly basis of any fixed term contracts due to expire. It is incumbent on the School, Institute or section to consult with each fixed term employee prior to the expiry of their fixed term contract and to explore options for extension and redeployments with them.
This document, which provides a statement of policy covering consultancy and commercial activities of staff in the University, has been approved as a draft working policy document. The Policy is in the process of being updated and a revised version will be published soon.
