design
This work brings together ideas that question inter-subjectivity through the relationship of the form of the object and image to its context within contemporary or traditional settings. Some of the themes being explored include decoration as a signifier within a cultural context, the dichotomy between design and the arts within textiles and fashion and the nature of the object as ephemera within post-modern culture.
Integration of both practice-led design research in textiles, garments and related materials, and functional product design using textiles (such as carried out in the Biomedical Textiles Research Centre). The research is wide ranging, encompassing features of the design process and its concepts through to fibre-based product innovation by design.
This group carries out research in mechanical engineering design, manufacture and materials, forming key components of the Scottish Manufacturing Institute (SMI), the Edinburgh Research Partnership (ERP) Institute of Integrated Systems and the University's strategic alliances with AWE and Renishaw. The work splits into two main themes: (i) digital tools, engineering knowledge capture and robotics and (ii) Micromechanics.
This research includes the RIFleX intiative and covers leads a diverse range of collaborative international multidisciplinary research programmes. These include the development of novel leading edge textile and colour-related technologies that aim at innovative design applications through exploitation of new technologies.
