The interests of this research group include the development of number concepts, social intelligence and imitation, and the application of these to mainstream and special needs education.
The Educational Development Unit (EDU) was established in 2003 to cover learning, teaching and research development. Part of the EDU's remit is to support the University's Learning and Teaching Strategy. This website covers the three main areas of learning and teaching, research and development, and flexible learning/virtual learning environment.
Heriot-Watt Research Park was created by the University to enable companies to establish their own research and development groups within the Edinburgh Campus. The objective is to provide the best possible location for established and new companies to undertake the development of new products, processes and services, through immediate access to all of the University's staff and facilities. The emphasis at the Park is on research, development, design, engineering, training, and prototyping activities leading to manufacture.
The University recognises employees as its most important resource and the Personal Development Review (PDR) process is one of the ways in which individuals can be made aware of their value to the organisation through being able to highlight their own contribution, receive feedback, and understand how it links to School/Institute/Section/team objectives. The process also enables opportunities for individual development to be identified and addressed and provides a formal opportunity for reviewees to discuss and address a range of other work-related issues. The PDR process encourages good staff management practice across the University and improved communication between management and staff.
The Research And Development, Innovation, Knowledge Adoption and Liaison (RADIKAL) project team aims to bring industry and academia closer together solving common problems and share resource such as costly facilities.
The Heriot-Watt Research Development Programme incorporates courses, online material, and an annual conference for all Heriot-Watt researchers. Throughout students' postgraduate study there are courses which help with the continuous development of the necessary skills for research and for future employment. Course sessions are delivered by both staff from within the University and from external experts who are invited in. Topics covered range from team building, time management through to thesis writing.
Continual growth and innovation at Heriot-Watt University is ultimately dependent on skilled employees at all levels and we recognise the importance of developing our staff. Whatever your role here at Heriot-Watt, we want to help you maintain and strengthen your skills and effectiveness. We want to work with you to establish what type of training and development would suit your preferred way of learning. We encourage all staff to consider how Staff Development events could benefit them personally and the University community as a whole.
In October 2006, the Court approved a proposed process for strategic development in the University. Court is responsible for the vision, mission, values, objectives and strategic goals of the University, and PME for the more detailed targets and activities as advised by PME Boards.
