Research builds upon established strengths in construction, engineering, management, surveying, design and urban studies, and developed cross-cutting research themes in the areas of infrastructure management, architecture and design in the built environment, and water and environmental management. Research groups cover: Construction Management; Construction Technology and Materials; Drainage; and Visual Impairment - adapting the built environment for the visually impaired.
Research into Marine Conservation including marine habitat mapping for conservation purposes in the UK and abroad (e.g. in Galapagos, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama). Studies focus on: the impact of climate change on marine species distributions and consequences for conservation management; the effects of pollution, particularly associated with the oil industry such as of waste discharges from oil production platforms and oil spill behaviour; the taxonomy and distribution of marine algae; ecology of marine benthic macrofauna and merofauna; and marine microbiology.
The Centre for Environment and Human Settlements - or CEHS - is an international centre providing teaching, training, research & development and other knowledge-based services and resources in the fields of environment and human settlements for the developing and rapidly urbanising world.
