Our Orkney Campus in Stromness is home to the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) which is part of Heriot-Watt University's prestigious Institute of Petroleum Engineering. ICIT was established to carry out advanced research, postgraduate training and consultancy in marine resource management and related issues.
Research into Marine Conservation including marine habitat mapping for conservation purposes in the UK and abroad (e.g. in Galapagos, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama). Studies focus on: the impact of climate change on marine species distributions and consequences for conservation management; the effects of pollution, particularly associated with the oil industry such as of waste discharges from oil production platforms and oil spill behaviour; the taxonomy and distribution of marine algae; ecology of marine benthic macrofauna and merofauna; and marine microbiology.
The School of Life Sciences offers postgraduate taught courses in brewing and distilling, food science, and marine and environmental studies, full details of which can be viewed here. Distance learning options for a number of programmes are also available. The Marine Technology Educational Consortium (MTEC), a collaboration of six UK universities recognised by industry for their excellence in marine technology education and research, is now offering an EPSRC Masters training package in Marine Technology with degree programmes available in seven technology areas. The School of Life Sciences prides itself on providing a friendly and supportive learning environment. There are rigorous teaching programmes in Biological Sciences, Sport and Exercise Science and in Applied Psychology. Life Sciences at Heriot-Watt University also includes the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling, and the Centre for Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology.
