policy
Heriot-Watt University is committed to equal opportunities for all, irrespective of sex, colour, ethnic origin, disability, age, marital status, religious or political beliefs, trade union membership, sexual orientation or any distinction deemed to be irrelevant. The University recognises the negative impact on individuals of the effects of discrimination in terms of educational attainment, career progression, self-fulfilment and self-esteem. The University welcomes diversity among all staff and students and will work to enable all individuals to realise their full potential and contribute as fully as possible to the University community.
The University aims to employ all staff on an open-ended basis in every appropriate circumstance. However, appointment of staff on a fixed term basis will be appropriate, in certain circumstances. Staff employed on fixed term contract will have similar terms and conditions of employment to colleagues in the University in comparable jobs with open ended contracts.
Parents of children aged under six or of disabled children under 18 have the right to apply to work flexibly and the University will consider their applications seriously. Eligible employees can request a change to the hours they work, the times when they are required to work or their location of work. This covers working patterns such as reduced hours, job-sharing, staggered hours and term-time working. However there is not an automatic right to work flexibly as there will always be circumstances when the University is unable to accommodate the staff member's desired work pattern.
Parents of children aged under six or of disabled children aged under 18 have the right to apply to work flexibly and the University has a duty to consider their applications seriously. All applications should be made on this Flexible Working Application Form.
The objective of the Fraud Prevention and Response Plan is to safeguard the proper use of the University's finances and resources, including the finances and resources of its subsidiary companies, against fraudulent acts, and to comply with the law and relevant regulations.
The Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOI) provides important new rights of access to information held by Scottish public authorities, including Heriot-Watt University. The Act also applies to companies that we own, either wholly or in partnership with other public authorities. This site provides all the information that staff need to know about Freedom of Information. It also includes a summary for FOI representatives and Section Heads and lists the FOI School and Support Service representatives.
Any form of harassment or bullying is unacceptable, and the University will not tolerate or condone such behaviour. Employees subject to harassment or bullying should raise the matter through the Harassment and Bullying Grievance Procedure, which outlines the steps for individuals and groups alleging harassment or bullying.
It is the policy of the University Court to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all University employees and students and the safety of others who may be affected by the undertakings of the University. The policy outlines the roles of the various bodies and individuals responsible for implementation, the monitoring procedures and the reporting requirements.
The University's policy on Intellectual Property, Confidential Information and Commercialisation clarifies the ownership of copyright in intellectual property created by students, staff, visitors and consultants and any exceptions to the University's first ownership. Any student, member of staff, visitor or consultant who comes into contact with any confidential information is under an obligation without limit of time to preserve the complete confidentiality of such. When a creator approaches Technology & Research Services (TRS) with their intellectual property proposal, TRS will convene an Innovation Exploitation Board who will decide whether to proceed with commercialisation.
