procedures
Documentation to explain and support the University's approval procedures for programmes, courses and modules is collected here. Proposals for programmes, courses and modules which are being introduced, modified or withdrawn have to go to the Undergraduate/Postgraduate Studies Committee for approval or notification. The approval process is indicated together with the paperwork required and the information that is added to ISS. Schools can approve certain modifications without having to put forward a proposal in particular circumstances.
The procedure to be followed in emergency situations involving a fire, medical or first aid are summarised here. The Emergency Procedures highlight the key role of the Control Room which is situated in James Watt II and can be contacted by dialling 2222 on any internal telephone.
The purpose of these local rules is to ensure that the hazards arising from lasers are adequately controlled and to ensure that people are not exposed to laser radiation in excess of the Maximum Permissible Exposure Limits. The roles of the Laser Safety Committee, University Laser Safety Officer and Building Laser Safety Supervisors are explained as well as registration, safety procedures, incident reporting and more.
Staff appointed to academic posts who have no teaching experience are normally subject to a period of probation, usually of three years. For those with some experience the period of probation may be reduced, or, where deemed appropriate, waived. Those who have satisfactorily completed a probationary period at a British university should normally be appointed without further probation.
The procedures for recommending staff for upgrading or regrading are outlined. The procedures are subdivided by categories of staff: academic, academic-related, research, technical, secretarial, clerical and library staff. There are separate boards representing each category of staff and they hear the requests.
In the event of the death or critical illness or injury of a student either on or off campus, it is important that all appropriate personnel are informed. Whoever receives the information, whether it is the student's School or Institute, warden, medical practitioner or other, should immediately contact Student Welfare Services. Student Welfare Services will be responsible for ensuring that the appropriate personnel are informed.
