signal
The Institute of Signal and Image Processing - or SIP - is a Joint Research Institute (JRI) of the universities of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt forming part of the Edinburgh Research Partnership. The Institute brings together high-quality researchers, strong links with the industrial and commercial sectors, and exciting new challenges and opportunities in the areas of signal and image processing and their applications.
Research ranges from physical simulation of the source of signals, through imaging and sensing techniques to the development of algorithms and their applications to real-world problems. Fundamental work includes: the study of non-linear processes, imaging science and new sensor development, probabilistically constrained estimation theory in several dimensions, coding, communication and information theory. SIP develops and applies whole system architectures, integrating sensor information for autonomous system operation. Applied research spans underwater systems, telecommunications, the leisure industries, avionics, surveillance, medical imaging, and robotics.
