Engineering at Heriot-Watt University enjoys an international reputation and well established connections with the professional and industrial world of science, engineering and technology.
Expert teams in electronic, electrical and computer, mechanical and chemical engineering research work on microsystems, robotics, intelligent systems, signal and image processing, digital tools, lasers and photonics, molecular simulation, nano-scale structures, novel chemical and bio-reactors through to larger scale crystallisation, developing world class solutions to meet industry needs.
Our engineering research in the built environment encompasses civil and structural and environmental engineering, as well as the construction and building services sectors.

The impact of our research is felt internationally across industries such as communications, medical electronics, transport, offshore oil and gas, defence, and energy generation and distribution.
Research in our postgraduate Institute of Petroleum Engineering is a multi-disciplinary activity encompassing a range of research areas including geomechanics and rock physics, hydrates, hydrocarbon recovery, production chemistry, reservoir engineering and uncertainty quantification.
The Heriot-Watt Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre is a multi-million pound, pioneering initiative designed to strengthen manufacturing industries in Scotland and the UK.
