Physical sciences
Our physical sciences research is multi-disciplinary, with topics ranging from theoretical studies to applied technology. We engage with many sectors of industry and academia.
Industry relevant research
Our work is well supported by the UK Research Councils and by industry, including BAE SYSTEMS, US Air Force, QinetiQ, Rolls Royce and many smaller high-technology companies. Physics and chemistry research has won an average of £5m per annum in research awards in recent years.
Our research groups cover a range of key areas, including the development of new lasers for drilling and non-linear processes, fibre optic sensors for 'smart structures' and other applications, and work on the fundamental properties of materials from which potential optoelectronic and other devices will derive.
Our research also plays a crucial role in ensuring our taught courses are up-to-date and relevant to the needs of industry.
Collaborating for excellence
Set up in 2004, SUPA and ScotCHEM facilitate innovative research on a larger scale and help to showcase Scottish science talent.
