Textiles & design
World leading research in textiles
Our research in textiles and design covers a wide range of disciplines, from textile science, engineering and technology, colour chemistry and physics, to clothing and design. Our specialism is in research at the design/technology interface where we develop technologies and exploit design applications in tandem.
At the forefront of industry development
Over the years we have been at the forefront of many of the textile industry’s major developments, including: chromic materials, printing on cashmere knitwear, 3-D simulation of flexible materials, inks for digital printers, fibre optic weaving, nano-technology and medical textiles.
Our research is supported by the research councils, the European Union, local cashmere industry, NHS and major fibre manufacturers and has been published and exhibited all over the world from Chemical Review to Vogue, the House of Lords to CNN.
We play a leading role in the TechniTex Knowledge Transfer Partnership reflecting our expertise in the area of technical textile research. We were recently awarded 3 fully funded PhD Scholarships, demonstrating our continued commitment to research in design.
